PRO301 Professional Studies
Unit Description

The ability to solve unstructured, multi-disciplined problems in the real world is a key to success within professional practice.  The application of professional attributes and skills (linked to graduate attributes) is the key driver of this units learning outcomes; how to assist student to be better prepared for professional practice and to improve their employability options.

Practitioners often state that recent graduates have the technical skills but cannot apply them in a professional setting, manner or in open ended scenarios; such professional skills encapsulate strong team working abilities, oral and written communication skills, problem solving and analytical skills, ethical and professional judgement, insightful interpretation of data and trends, and in being a difference maker or influencer.  The development of these professional attributes/skills will be transferable across business, not for profits, government, communities and society; these become life-long attributes for use throughout one’s career.

This unit is based upon Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and the Flipped Classroom (FCR) model that assumes a ‘less teaching but more learning’ philosophy where students come pre-read and use their existing knowledge, experiences and research skills to solve open-ended problems in a professional advisor role to solve clients’ problems.  To this end the unit will be facilitated by the lecturer in guiding students in their studies rather than teaching them and guest visitors to talk about issues/problems in their workplace will be a key component in the student workshops and discussions.  Students are expected to draw upon all prior learning in this program, as well as their individual experiences in reaching appropriate conclusions and recommendations for their clients.
